The Unintended Miscommunication

I know. How can such an innocent phrase sound so wrong? As mentioned in one of the previous posts , intonation makes a huge difference to the meaning of what you say in English.

Imagine this: you’re currently preoccupied with something, or you’ve got something on your mind. A colleague of yours or a senior at work dropped by to remind you of a meeting later. Combined with your facial expression, here are a few of the possible (but not all) ways your innocent ‘I know’ can be misinterpreted:

“I know…”

If

you’re also wearing a stressed-out face, the others might think you’re on the verge of breaking down and may start to get worried or concerned about you: “Don’t remind me, please… I’m at my limit already (save me).”

“I know!”

Maybe you just want to sound excited or with anticipation, but if there isn’t a hint of ‘brightness’, you might sound annoyed, or maybe worse, impatient: “Gosh! I’m not a child, okay? *eye roll*”

“I know.”

You want to sound confident, but the flat tone used here can be translated to sarcasm and / or make you sound cocky: “Who are you to remind me? Don’t tell me how to do my job, I know what I’m doing.”

Conclusion

Well, then. How do we make sure that the others will not misunderstand us when we say ‘I know’? Below are a few
