A skill which I think I would be able to teach other people is publicspeaking and debate. In university I joined a public speaking and debate societyorganized by one of our teachers. I bought a couple of books about publicspeaking, which also, at the time, included some CDs of famous speakers andtheir speeches – Martyn Luther King, John F. Kennedy, and so on. I became reallyinspired with this, and I also enjoyed the debate club. Both of these skills arequite important if you want to enter into the academic world and succeed. Oftenyou have to construct very logical arguments based on evidence and support youropinions strongly with examples and reasoning. This is not something that comesnaturally to everyone, and I think it takes practice and patience and a certaindegree of knowledge and learning. I feel very enthusiastic about teaching othersand I think it’s really exciting when you have a skill that you are confidentabout passing on to others. I also believe that in teaching, you also developyourself too, because you learn a lot from working out the best way to structureclasses, workshops and seminars, and through doing so you improve your ownskills. I also believe that Chinese students have an aptitude for publicspeaking because we have a strong culture of performances and performing infront of others – so I think this really means that students here get reallyengaged when it comes to preparing speeches and trying their best whenperforming for the interest of an audience. I also believe that in future publicspeaking will become more and more important - in our global and fast-changingsociety, the importance of communicating ideas and beliefs across cultures, withlogic and clear explanation will become greater and greater. So, I think this isnot only a skill that I would be able to teach, and enjoy teaching, but also onewhich is important and very useful.
