要注意区分例句中的“the number of”和“a number of”。
the number of用来表示事物的数量。当它作为主语的中心词时，其后的谓语动词用单数形式。同时，说明数量的多少常用形容词large和 small来表示。如：
The number of the students in our class is very large. 我们班的学生数量非常大。
a number of表示事物数量多。近义词有many和a lot of等。a number of后面常跟可数名词的复数形式，谓语动词则相应地也用复数形式。如：
A number of governments banned the ship from their territorial waters.许多国家都禁止那艘船进入其领海。
Trains could not compete with planes in terms of luxury and 
convenience.在奢华和便利方面，火车无法与飞机比。
in terms of在上文中表示“根据；就……而言；在……方面”。
表示这个意思的词语还有很多，例如：considering, regarding等。
in terms of还可以表示“用……术语、语言、字眼”。表达这个意思的时候，句型则比较自由多变，可以直接说成in XX terms或是in terms that等。举一个简单的例子：
The figures are expressed in terms of percentage/in percentage terms.那些数字是以百分数表示的。
They know the factors that play a positive role inkeepingdown body weight.
他们知道有助于控制体重的因素。
上文中的“keep down”表示“使（数目、大小、数量等）保持在低水平”，可以理解为“control”。keep down还能引申出“镇压、压制”和“不使（食物或饮料）吐出”的意思。来看两个例句更好地理解一下吧：

leave me alone表示“让我静一静”。leave somebody后面加形容词可以表示使某人置于什么状态之下。
alone强调的是客观状态，你独自一人，没有人陪伴；
lonely则更强调内心的孤苦，可能你在现实生活中并不是一个人，但是你心里却始终觉得孤寂。有一个表达很有意思：
I'm alone, but I'm never lonely.
我孤身一人，但我从不寂寞。
You may make use of his library.你可以利用他的图书馆。
上文的“make use of”表示“利用、使用”，其实跟单独使用use的意思差不多。
强调use的程度时可以在use前加形容词来修饰，如：make full/good use of。
之前我们也讲到过take advantage这个词组，它们都可以表示使用和利用，区别在于后者的“欺骗、利用”等贬义更浓，而前者不在“use”前加上修饰程度的形容词时，只是表示“使用”的意思。
