ce in her home. It’s an antique and it’s apparently worth alot of money. It’s been passed down through the generations of my family, and mymother takes great care of it. She makes sure it is serviced every few years, kept perfectly clean and polished, and doesn’t let any of us touch it. She’salways been very protective over that clock and says she’d be very upset if itwas broken or damaged. So, the clock has great sentimental value as well asmonetary value. My mother has always been a sensitive and nostalgic person, soshe has quite a few things that have been passed down through the family on herside, and she looks after them with great care. However, the clock is the onething that she treasures more than anything else. I remember one time when I wasa kid, I was playing with it and a screw came out of the base – my mum wasfurious. It was easy to fix, but still she was crazy – she’s really particularabout things like this, and takes great care of all her possessions, especiallythese sentimental items.

1. What kinds of items would a family keep for a long time?

Families usually keep heirlooms for a very long time, passed down throughthe generations. Things like antiques, or photographs of the family, perhapseven books. Some people have books that they really cherish and take care of –novels – things like this. Others collect records, vinyl records from theirgrandparents. I can’t really think of anything else off-hand to be honest.

2. Are there any differences between the things that are important to afamily now and in the past?

Yes, I believe so. I think today we tend to take things for granted more.We don’t cherish or treasure things like we used to many years ago because welive in more fortunate times, and have a lot of opportunities to buy new things, rather than take care of the things we have and repair them when they arebroken. Young people are way more frivolous today than they were in the past, and often take things for granted, especially people who have money and are usedto a very comfortable standard of living.

3. What kinds of things are kept in museums?

Museums house all sorts of things. From precious antiques, to relics fromthe past. Historical items mainly. Chinese museums usually house things likejade – a lot of statues, figures and jewelry made from jade, a green preciousstone. But in general, anything that is old and of historical or cultural value,is stored in a museum and usually exhibited in a way that visitors can enjoylooking at these items and read about them.
