Reading is no doubt the cornerstone of English learning, and there are some practical reading skills that can be helpful for comprehending main ideas in the process of reading.
阅读毫无疑问是英语学习中的基石，下面让我们来看看这些可以帮助我们在阅读过程中更好理解主题的阅读技巧吧！

Scanning and Skimming
The purpose is to basically divide an article into several parts according to its structure.
这么做的目的是根据结构将一篇文章分成几个部分。
First, pay attention to the headlines suggesting the main idea and the subtitles summarizing the supporting ideas. Through them, it is easy to grasp how an article develops. The next step is to underline the thesis statements lying in each paragraph. Besides, the conclusion should not be ignored since it summarizes the main points of the article.
首先，注意到能够表达主旨的标题。通过这些标题，我们可以很简单地把握文章脉络。接着标注出每一段的中心思想句。也不要忽视结论，因为它概括了文章的要点。

Adjusting Your Reading Speed
1) Slow down when you encounter an unfamiliar word.
当你遇到一个不熟悉的单词时，放慢阅读速度。
Try to understand it based on the context, and then read on and come back for its exact meaning later. Regarding long and complex sentences and paragraph structures, take time to untangle them to get the real message.
尽量根据文本内容来理解这个单词并继续读下去，等过后再回过头来了解这个单词的具体意思。对于长难句和段落结构，花时间去理清它们来获取真正的信息。
2) Speed up when you encounter simple materials with few concepts new to you.
在读到一些对你来讲没有太多新概念的简单材料时，加快阅读速度。
In this case, just browse the article quickly. Remember to be flexible when choosing the materials.

The House on Mango Street

The House on Mango Street is a novel written by Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros in 1984. Structured as a series of vignettes, it tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, a 12-year-old Chicana girl growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago. Based in part on Cisneros's own experience, the novel follows Esperanza over the span of one year in her 
life, as she enters adolescence and begins to face the reality of life as a young woman in a poor and patriarchal community. Elements of Mexican-American culture and themes of social class, race, identity, and gender are interwoven throughout the novel.

The Little Prince
小王子
The Little Prince is a novel written by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 1942. The story follows a young prince who visits various planets in space, including the Earth, and addresses themes of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss. Despite its style as a children's book, The Little Prince makes observations about life and human nature.
《小王子》是法国作家托万·德·圣·埃克苏佩里于1942年创作的著名儿童文学短篇小说。故事讲述了一位年轻的王子访问地球等太空中各个星球的故事，讲述了孤独、友谊、爱情、迷失等主题。尽管这本书是儿童读物，但透过它，你可以看到作者对生活和人性的观察。
